N is for Nyree

“How are we to know that Nyree is not under the demon’s influence?”

It was obvious to all when Decklar’s eyes went to the white streaks in Nyree’s black hair.

“Nyree, would you care to respond?”
“It is true that I have a little demon power. This is not a fault of mine or my parents’ and it has not fouled my life. A demon could not control my mind.”

M is for Mist

The mists rolled in a great number of years ago. Over the seas it came never seeming to change no matter what the weather chose to do. Several people of the land of Haylock murmured to each other at times that it was an ill mist, coming in from another world entirely. Most who heard them speaking that way merely laughed but no-one could fathom what brought it in, and kept it there.
Over the years since the beginnings of it, it had become the norm to be inside before dark fell. Those caught outside after that point were never seen again or were found dead in a curious manner; strung up on a tree or some other pillar like object with a ghostly pallor and jaw marks stretching the tops of their necks. The people in the land closed their curtains and locked their doors, not wanting to set eyes on whatever roamed the night.

L is for Laurie

Where were the others? The group that had attacked he and Naeem was larger than this, that was the only way Laurie had been able to decide that there was only two thirds here incidentally. Those men, the cruelty coming off of them was so strong it almost had him vomiting. There had been disappearances happening all over the town for months recently though Laurie suspected it had been going on longer than that. What had lead him out into the forest however was so strong, it was the stench of death, that was coming off of the men as well now that he was close. That was what he could smell as he'd approached. Whilst the people had been missing it was alright, he could feel they were missing but no more and that had never bothered him in his disconnected state but then death came flooding in from everywhere and he hadn't understood why no-one else could sense it. Each victim had been cut away from him and it had been painful, the link he'd had with the missing persons had been severed one by one recently, that left a trail and he'd followed it as a dog did a scent. Naeem had distressed so much about not being able to soothe his pain... Naeem.

Before Laurie had a chance to begin mourning once again a sound drew his attention, it was the sound of laughter and of many people crashing through nature. As he looked out behind the camp he saw them, two men first each with a young girl draped over their shoulder and then four more came through. He'd been spotted.
What was he supposed to do now? The anger was keeping him from behaving as he normally would but having anger and being able to act in a situation he wasn't sure about were two entirely different things but as one of the men dropped the girl he was carrying to the ground Laurie dizzied and found his vision darkening even as he stood tall.

K is for Kj

" You really bought the house Mr. Florian,” he paused and gave Kj a concerned look, as though worried for him. “You’re a braver man than most.”
Kj shook his head, sipping his drink before gracing the man with an answer. “Those stories are just that, Mr Lawford, stories.”
Lawford kept his look anyway and moved onto the next customer. The story of the house was that murders had been committed up there by some long dead murderers and that the ghosts of the people killed still haunted the house. Kj took another sip of his drink and concentrated on its dark, caramel, colours. There weren’t such things as ghosts, he’d told his newly acquired assistant that when he hired him.
          “Ghosts, Mr Gregory?”
“Yes sir, the town is full of them. So people say.”
“No.” He looked over the desk of his home at the young man. “People’s imaginations lead them to believe they have seen a ghost.” He tapped his papers into an orderly stack and set them aside. “I suppose the people of your town hear things in older houses?”
Mr James Gregory looked to him, startled eyebrows rising up above his wide eyes. “Yes, Mr Florian, there have always been tales about those sorts of occurrences.”
Kj nodded, understanding, and picked up his cup of tea. “Buildings absorb memories and to an open ear, the memories occasionally speak. Buildings hold onto the memories they absorb until someone listens to them in full.” He brought himself back into the room and out of his journey into his own knowledge. Mr Gregory was staring at him, open mouthed. Kj suppressed his naturally dry smile. “My investigative business surrounds those sorts of cases, though I will consider most any case. Don’t worry Mr Gregory,” he said as he rose from his chair and guided Mr Gregory out of his small office in his home. “You’ll soon learn to listen. Goodnight Mr…”
          “Please, sir, call me James.”
“Very well,” Kj bowed his head, “goodnight James. I will see you to the station tomorrow morning for the journey back. You remember where the guest room is?”
          “Yes sir, thank you.”

J is for Jeremy

Jeremy folded the journal closed and walked it back to its place. He slid it between its companion journals and turned around, heading toward the kitchen. Tea was overdue.

Within he stood dressed in an apron considering the cupboard’s contents. Belatedly, as he guided the door closed, a packet glanced his eye. Flour.
Cooking had been as magic to him as a child. How his mother put things into a bowl and turned them into something delicious he hadn’t known. Now in his own kitchen he concocted magic once more. He would enfold it in his hands and shape the magic into something…enjoyable, if not delicious.

I is for Isaiah

3rd day, 2nd week, season two.

He has been to see us again. I have no idea if he’s benevolent or not yet he worries me. There hasn’t been any mention of a contract thus far. Sophia noticed him watching us at Lillian’s grave the first time, this has been the third sighting. After meeting my darling Lillian and learning more about the world of ghosts I am aware that he has two more meetings, after that he won’t be able to offer anything. I hope he doesn’t succeed. I am not ready for whatever this ghost wants.

Jeremy mulled over the diary entry, his feelings of the man hadn’t changed very much. Those instincts he’d had at the beginning were well placed –in his opinion. Sophia’s differed somewhat-.

H is for Hunting

Many of my characters are hunting for something, but they are also hunted more often than not alongside.

Zacharius from Enfractu is hunting for the answer to end a war. Alongside creatures and demons who would like nothing more than to hunt for him in a more traditional manner of hunting for food.

Nikhil from People of the Light is hunting for a travelling prison and (he thinks) something else as well. Alongside him he is forever hunted by his adversary the ominous guards of the prison. They would like nothing better than to stop him finding the prison at all costs.

Erin hunts for answers to his lost memory and more literally, he hunts via his rifle in defence of his region. What he defends the region from are curious beings who appear to humans as overly large men. They hunt for humans in order to conquer the world. Nothing like a bit of delusions of grandeur.
